Jeff Joudrey Artistic Director Halifax Camerata Singers announces new program

From Halifax Camerata Singers' press release:

Founded by Artistic Director
Jeff Joudrey in 1986, Halifax Camerata Singers has become one of Canada’s leading chamber choirs, winning the Healey Willan Grand Prize for Canadian choirs in 2010.  Their latest recording, A Time for All Things, won the 2016 Best Classical Recording from Music Nova Scotia and was nominated for an ECMA in 2017.

Music, memories and life in Halifax and the battlefront in France form the backdrop for the choir’s poignant production, Halifax 1917:

From Dreams to Despair,

Sunday, December 3, 2017

7:30 p.m.

Halifax Central Library

This co-production with the Halifax Central Library will take place in Paul O’Regan Hall, and also features actor/narrator Jeremy Webb, archival photographs from the days before and after the Explosion, and Rhapsody Quintet.  Last March this concert sold out and people were turned away at the door, so it is highly recommended to purchase tickets early for this one night only presentation, taking place just three days before the actual 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion.

Halifax Camerata Singers will once again perform as part of the Symphony NS Chorus in December for two performances of Handel’s Messiah, this year conducted by Symphony Nova Scotia’s Maestro Bernhard Gueller, in the Mozart orchestration of the perennial holiday favorite with Dartmouth native Suzanne Rigden, soprano; Lauren Segal, mezzo-soprano; Owen McCausland, tenor and Brett Polegato, baritone.  These performances take place on

Thursday and Friday, December 21 and 22 in the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium.

Her spectacular career has included a performance at the Grammy Awards, a top-15 spot on Billboard’s classical charts, and rave reviews for her “arrestingly beautiful tone colour” (The Strad) and “hugely impressive technique” (BBC Music).

Here's what Denise had to say about the concert:

“I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to perform the Shostakovich Concerto No. 1 with Symphony Nova Scotia! I've grown with this concerto since my childhood, and it will be very special to play it with Symphony Nova Scotia for the first time. It is a deeply moving and passionate work that I feel fortunate to share with both an orchestra and audience that are so close to me."

Jodie Fox on her experience studying stage design in Hanover, Germany

Dear Board Members, Supporters and Jury of the NSTT,

Jodie Fox, stage design
As a thank you for your support during my past semester I would like to give a short update of what my semester looked like.

I am studying stage design in Hanover, Germany. This past semester was my second, and it was part of a one year foundation year. My main project throughout the semester was designing a set for Sophocle's Antigone. I started by reading the play many, many times and letting a picture form in my mind. After re-working a few ideas and lots of discussions with my teachers I finalized my design and built a model.

I had the opportunity to work with the head of the lighting department in the Hanover Opera House to try out interesting ways of creating new and fitting atmospheres for my design. I worked with a photography student to document my work.

I feel so grateful that this program allows me to work with many different artists and professionals, and I am so excited to be going back in a few days.

I spent July working as a dresser at a theater in Heidelberg, a city in southern Germany. Although I was not working directly with the set department I loved observing how all the departments come together to pull off an amazing show. I was able to ask lots of questions, and learned a lot about the theater world in the short time.

I spent the second half of my summer break working in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia with Toshiko MacAdam and her company Interplay. Again I have learned an incredible amount in such a short time about artists working in the real world. Working with Toshiko has taught me to appreciate perfection, and shown me the importance of taking extreme pride in your work.

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer. I would like to thank you for your generous support and interest in my journey!

Best wishes,

Jodie Fox

Thank you note for our supporters from Ivy Charles, theatre

Hello Talent Trust supporters, jury and board members,

I am writing to express my gratitude for your financial support of my Master of Arts in Acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, which I have just completed. I am back in Nova Scotia now, having learned so much about myself artistically and personally, and I can't wait to see what comes next. It has been an incredible year of life-changing experiences, including performing on the Globe stage in London, performing in a Glasgow theatre festival, doing placements at the Stratford and Shaw festivals as part of my program, and developing and performing the work of some amazing Scottish playwrights. I'm so grateful that I had this opportunity and I know that the skills I've gained this year will benefit me greatly in my career.

Thank you so much!

Ivy Charles
