Barbara Hannigan in Lieutenant Governor Masterworks Art Award Panel Discussion at Halifax Central Library

Barbara Hannigan, soprano, conductor, Juno and Grammy award winner, will participate in a panel discussion called Artists & Conversation at the Halifax Central Library on September 17.

Artists & Conversation is an annual event that features the creators of the finalist works for the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award.

Barbara has created a stellar career since receiving a Talent Trust scholarship to assist with her studies at the University of Toronto. 

She earned Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at U of T, and continued her studies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival, the Centre d'arts Orford, and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.

She performs around the world, with orchestras including The Berlin Philharmonic, Münchner Philharmoniker, Gothenburg Symphony, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony.

Barbara won Juno and Grammy awards for her album Crazy Girl Crazy. That project has placed her among the five Masterworks Arts Award finalists.

Shortly after her stop in Halifax, she'll star in the world premiere of
Bérénice at the Paris Opera, where she plays the title role. Bérénice takes place at the Palais Garnier from September 26 to October 17.

Congratulations! Barbara Hannigan winner of the 2018 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year.

Crazy Girl Crazy, the debut album of Barbara Hannigan as singer and conductor is the winner of the 2018 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral.

The JUNO Awards are presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music. New members of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame are also inducted as part of the awards ceremonies.

Crazy Girl Crazy has garnered critical acclaim since its release, receiving a 2018 GRAMMY award for Best Classical Solo Vocal album, as well as the Klara Award (Belgium) for Best International Classical CD.


Crazy Girl Crazy is the first showcase of Barbara’s work as both a soprano and conductor, with the Amsterdam-based orchestra LUDWIG. The album was released on released on 22 September 2017 by Alpha Classics.

The recording is the first showcase of her work as both a soprano and conductor, with the Amsterdam-based orchestra LUDWIG. The album was released on 22 September 2017, by Alpha Classics.

Crazy Girl Crazy brings together Berg’s Lulu Suite, Berio’s Sequenza III for solo voice, and a specially commissioned arrangement of Gershwin’s Girl Crazy by Tony Award-winning composer and arranger Bill Elliott.
