Pianist Andrew Son on Final Stop of Atlantic Young Artist Regional Tour November 25

Andrew Son performs in Halifax on the final stop of his Atlantic Canada tour with a free afternoon concert of Chopin, Scarlatti, Mendelssohn, and Rachmaninoff. 

The performance takes place Sunday, November 25.

Andrew is an award-winning pianist who recently captured the 2018 Atlantic Young Artist Competition and the Piano Rose Bowl at the Kiwanis Music Festival in Halifax.

He represented Nova Scotia at the 2015 Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association National Piano Competition in Vancouver. 

Andrew received Talent Trust scholarships from 2014-17. He’s currently a student at Dalhousie University.

The Talent Trust is pleased to co-present Andrew’s Halifax concert with Cecilia Concerts, Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers Association, and the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts.

Andrew Son Wins Two Prizes at National Music Festival in New Brunswick

Pianist Andrew Son wins 2nd Prize Grand Award at National Music Festival.



Andrew Son continues to win prestigious awards for his masterful piano playing.

He participated in the 2018 National Music Festival at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, which ran from August 12 -16

He won first prize in the National Competition as the piano representative from Nova Scotia.

The first prize winners from the initial round of competitions (including voice, piano, strings, classical guitar, woodwind, brass, chamber group, and musical theatre solo) competed in the Grand Award Competition. 

Andrew won the 2nd Prize Grand Award.

From Andrew, who received Talent Trust scholarships from 2014-17: 

“I just wanted to thank the Talent Trust for the tremendous amount of support over the years. I have never thought I would be able to reach such a place, but with the support and encouragement of the Talent Trust and many friends around me, I just feel so grateful and thankful.” 

As the winner of the 2018 Atlantic Young Artist Competition, Andrew will be performing on a regional tour. His final concert will be in Halifax in November. Stay tuned for details.

Andrew Son Wins Atlantic Young Artist 2018 Competition

On April 21, five talented pianists from the Atlantic provinces participated in the 2018 Atlantic Young Artist Competition held at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. After recital programs of contrasting works, Andrew Son was declared the winner.

Andrew is currently in his first year at Dalhousie University, studying with Lynn Stodola. He plans to major in neuroscience while completing a minor in music.

He was recently awarded the Piano Rose Bowl in the 2018 Kiwanis Music Festival in Halifax. He represented Nova Scotia at the 2015 Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association National Piano Competition in Vancouver.  As the Atlantic Young Artist for 2018, Andrew will complete a short concert tour of the Atlantic region in the fall.

The competition and tour are projects of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations and its provincial counterparts in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. Instrumentalists between the ages of 16 and 25 and singers between 16 and 27 who are studying with a registered music teacher are eligible to enter.

Congratulations!!! PIANIST ANDREW SON WINS 2015 DEBUT ATLANTIC AWARD FOR MUSICAL EXCELLENCE

Halifax, NS - Debut Atlantic is pleased to announce that Nova Scotia pianist Andrew Son is the winner of the 2015 Debut Atlantic Award for Musical Excellence. Quickly emerging as a top artist on both the piano and violin, 15 year old Andrew has been busy climbing the competition ranks. Currently a student at the Halifax Grammar School, he studies piano with Betty Ro from the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts and violin with Professor Philippe Djokic of Dalhousie University.

Renowned Canadian pianist and past Chair of the Board of Debut Atlantic Robert Kortgaard said of this year’s recipient:
Debut Atlantic congratulates Andrew Son our 2015 Young Artist Award recipient. It is our mandate to encourage and support the next generation of talented young Atlantic Canadians. Andrew’s accomplished performance displayed a strong technique and musical understanding that will become the foundation of what we hope will be a happy artistic journey. Established in 1999, the Debut Atlantic Award for Musical Excellence is awarded annually to an Atlantic Canadian high school music student as chosen by a member of our distinguished alumni. The award recognizes talented youth and is designed to support and encourage the development of young musicians in Atlantic Canada. The Award consists of a $1,000 cash prize and an opportunity for the recipient to perform as a special guest at a Debut Atlantic concert.

Andrew will receive his award and be a featured guest in a Debut Atlantic concert on Friday, March 27th at the Chester Playhouse in Chester, NS with Debut Atlantic artist, pianist Lucas Porter. He will also be featured at The Indian River Festival in PEI on June 27th as part of their Youth Legacy Concert.
