Violinist Marc Djokic Launches his Debut Album, Solo Seven

Violinist Marc Djokic launches Solo Seven, his debut album of Canadian music on September 22. 

The official launch party takes place in the main foyer of Salle Bourgie at the Musée des beaux-arts in Montréal at 9:30 p.m.

The celebration follows Marc's concert with the MCO (McGill Chamber Orchestra). Composers featured on the album will be in attendance to say a few words about their works. 

Marc began studying with his father, violinist Philippe Djokic, one of Canada’s great soloists, at an early age. He made his first orchestra debut at 14, and his scholarships and awards include a Talent Trust scholarship, an award from Canada Council’s Instrument Bank, and the Governor General’s Millennium Award. He’s been featured on Bravo! television series The Classical Now.

CAMMAC Music Centre named Marc as their first Artist-in-Residence for the 2017-2019 seasons. During his residency he’ll teach, perform, conduct research, and create a commissioned work to be premiered at CAMMAC.

Now based in Montreal, Marc will return to Halifax to appear in the Cecilia Concerts 30th anniversary season with a concert on February 24, 2019. (2019 is also a notable Talent Trust anniversary year — our 75th!)

Multi-award-winning violinist Heemin Choi has performed extensively and has appeared as soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia. Presently on a full music scholarship in Texas, he brings a bit of southern warmth to this mid-winter recital.

Heemin Choi has received multiple scholarships from the Talent Trust and won the 2016 and 2010 Raymond Simpson Award and the 2014 NSTT's Lieutenant Governor's Award.

Marc Djokic, violinist wins Prix Goyer Canada's largest prize for classical music

Violinist Marc Djokic has been awarded the second biennial Prix Goyer, Canada’s largest prize for classical music. Congratulations Marc!

Awarded to a ‘collaborative emerging musician’ under the age of 33, the prize is worth CAD $125,000, which includes: $50,000 in cash, $50,000 from online classical music video channel Noncerto in the form of production, distribution and marketing of 18 classical music videos; a commission from composer Matthias Maute worth $13,500; and $11,500 of business coaching.

Marc won the Talent Trust's Raymond Simpson Award in 2002 and the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Award in 2003. 

Lilith Richter Stephenson, violin to lead the MCPA Chamber Orchestra Tuesday, May 24

Lilith Richter Stephenson will be leading the MCPA Chamber orchestra and soloing in a performance of Vivaldi's Spring at 7 p.m. at the Lilian Piercey Concert Hall in Halifax.

Andrew Son, pianist and violinist 2014 NSTT Scholarship Recipient

Halifax, NS - Debut Atlantic is pleased to announce that Nova Scotia pianist Andrew Son is the winner of the 2015 Debut Atlantic Award for Musical Excellence. Quickly emerging as a top artist on both the piano and violin, 15 year old Andrew has been busy climbing the competition ranks. Currently a student at the Halifax Grammar School, he studies piano with Betty Ro from the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts and violin with Professor Philippe Djokic of Dalhousie University.

Renowned Canadian pianist and past Chair of the Board of Debut Atlantic Robert Kortgaard said of this year’s recipient:

Established in 1999, the Debut Atlantic Award for Musical Excellence is awarded annually to an Atlantic Canadian high school music student as chosen by a member of our distinguished alumni. The award recognizes talented youth and is designed to support and encourage the development of young musicians in Atlantic Canada. The Award consists of a $1,000 cash prize and an opportunity for the recipient to perform as a special guest at a Debut Atlantic concert.

Andrew will receive his award and be a featured guest in a Debut Atlantic concert on Friday, March 27th at the Chester Playhouse in Chester, NS with Debut Atlantic artist, pianist Lucas Porter. He will also be featured at The Indian River Festival in PEI on June 27th as part of their Youth Legacy Concert.
