Port Cities Debuts with Symphony Nova Scotia in 2018 Halifax Pop Explosion

Tickets are going fast for this one — Breagh Mackinnon, with Port Cities bandmates Carleton Stone, Dylan Guthro, will perform in their first-ever concert with Symphony Nova Scotia on October 19 and 20. The show is part of the 2018 Halifax Pop Explosion. 

The Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax is the perfect setting for Port Cities' atmospheric, intimate sound, which will feature brand-new orchestral arrangements, conducted by Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser. 

Breagh received the Talent Trust Chico Berardi Special Award for Excellence in 2013. She was a nominee for the Nova Scotia Music Best New Artist award as well as an East Coast Music Association (ECMA) Rising Star award that same year.

Port Cities has received five Nova Scotia Music Awards, a SOCAN #1 Award (for their song “Back to the Bottom”), and hit #1 on CBC and Spotify music charts. The band is also multiple ECMA award nominees.

A Big East Coast Thank You and a Big Secret 75th Anniversary Project

As most people in this region are aware, there was a huge celebration of East Coast music in Halifax this past weekend. 

The Talent Trust has some people to thank (but we can’t tell you why — not just yet).

• The crew from Bell Aliant: Drew Domokos and Brian Fisher.
• The Marquee Ballroom
• And especially the good folks from the East Coast Music Awards: Andy McLean, Jeff Lawton, and Gregor Ash.

We’d also like to thank Reeny Smith, for the shout out to the Talent Trust from the stage. That was definitely not confidential, and neither are her abilities. Reeny’s a powerhouse.

The secret project? Well, we can tell you it has something to do with our 75th anniversary, which happens in 2019. You can probably guess at least some of it has to do with music. But that’s call we can say for now. Because it isn’t ready yet.

We’re pretty sure you’ll love it.

Reeny Smith Nominated for Bucky Adams Memorial East Coast Music Award

Reeny Smith is an award-winning R&B and soul artist from North Preston, Nova Scotia. She's adding to her accolades with a nomination for the Bucky Adams Memorial Award at the 2018 East Coast Music Awards.

Reeny's family boasts an impressive group of performers. Her father and grandfather (Wallace Smith Sr. and Jr.) are both former members of the iconic gospel group the Gospel Heirs, and her uncles Carson and Murray Downey are members of the Carson Downey Band. Reeny began singing and playing piano at the age of five. 

Showcasing on the Breakout Stage at the ECMA Awards and Conference in 2016, Reeny performed at the awards show in 2017. She released her first single “Good Girl Swag” in February 2018, and her first full-length album is in the works. 

The ECMA festival and conference runs from May 2-6, with the awards show on May 3 at the Scotiabank Centre.

Lucky ticket holders will see singer-songwriter Breagh Mackinnon perform at the 2018 ECMA Awards Show with her bandmates Carleton Stone and Dylan Guthro, collectively known as Port Cities. 

The Nova Scotia trio is nominated for Pop Recording of the Year, for their self-titled record Port Cities. Breagh was nominated for the ECMA Rising Star award in 2013.

The ECMA Festival and Conference runs from May 2-6, with the awards show on May 3 at the Scotiabank Centre.
