Karen Myatt and Lukas Pearse Showcase at the Halifax Jazz Festival

Talent Trust alumni, vocalist Karen Myatt, and bassist/composer/sound editor/media artist, Lukas Pearse share their love of music in the upcoming Halifax Jazz Festival, performing their respective free concerts as part of the annual series.

Karen Myatt is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC and was named one of Broadway’s Rising Stars in the Broadway Summer Series. Karen made her Symphony NS debut as the featured vocalist in the world premiere of Thorgy & the Thorchestra starring Thorgy Thor of Ru Paul's Drag Race fame. Karen's debut album Enchanté was recorded at Sonic Temple Studio in Halifax.

Open Company is a curated improvisation session where exceptional musicians meet onstage. Hosted by Upstream’s Lukas Pearse, offering a meeting between local and visiting improvisors, followed by a sit-in session that is anything but Standards. Come on in, the water’s fine... Expect the unexpected.

Lukas Pearse is an award-winning film composer and member of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, Lukas is an acoustic, electric and digital musician and sound artist with professional experience in a wide array of genres and creative forms.

Lukas Pearse Hosts Musical Improvisation at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival

In addition to its feature performance space on the Waterfront Stage, the 2018 TD Halifax Jazz Festival has venues across the city during its July 10-15 run.

The Open Company Sessions, presented by Upstream, is a curated series that feature free improvisation. The sessions are hosted by Halifax musicians Geordie Haley and Lukas Pearse.

Lukas is a bassist, media artist, and sound editor. He received a Talent Trust scholarship in 2003.

He’s an award-winning film composer and member of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada. He’s served as the Artistic Director of the Upstream Music Association since 2015. 

Lukas is also an experienced teacher, working with private students as well as through the Centre for Art Tapes and NSCAD University.

In the Open Company Sessions, local musical luminaries and visiting virtuosos meet onstage to create spontaneous music.

The sessions run from 11pm - 1am from Wednesday, July 11 through Saturday July 14 at ART BAR at 1873 Granville Street in Halifax. Admission is free.

Gina Burgess Presents an Exclusive Quintet Premiere at the Halifax Central Library

For this year's Obey Convention, Gina Burgess has created a new and unique piece which she will present at the Halifax Central Library. 

Gina is a four-time ECMA award winner with the gypsy-jazz outfit Gypsophilia, fronts her own klezmer band Der Heisser, is one fifth of the Iqaluit-based Arctic rock band The Jerry Cans, and is a regular collaborator in flamenco and Arabic music ensembles. 

Inspired by the minimalistic compositional tradition of Terry Riley and Steve Reich, Gina has also infused elements of traditional Inuit throat singing, poetry, trance, and Gregorian/Indian chant in her latest composition.

The quintet will feature Gina (violin) Susanne Brown (viola) Norm Adams (cello) Lukas Pierce (double bass) and Janice Jackson (voice).

The premiere will take place Halifax on Thursday, May 24 at the Paul O’Regan Hall at the Halifax Central Library. 

The show starts at 6pm. Admission is free.

Former NSTT scholarship recipient Lukas Pearse with Mike Ritchie won the Best Atlantic Orginal Score at the 2015 Atlantic Film Festival for North Mountain.

This award is sponsored by Hideout Studios and entails $500 cash and $5,000 services.
