Vocalist Janice Jackson, Arash Delavar (acoustic, electric guitar), and Mohammad Sahraei (tar, setar, beghlama, and hand drum) are the members of the trio Teleet Ensemble. 

Their debut concert takes place Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s University Art Gallery

The performance is co-hosted by St. Mary’s University Art Gallery and Janice’s company Vocalypse Productions.

Janice received Talent Trust scholarship to support her voice studies and is also a Portia White award recipient. In addition to being an accomplished soprano, she’s a contemporary music specialist, producer, and vocal instructor and coach.

Janice has performed in over 200 world premieres, many works written specifically for her, and appeared with contemporary music ensembles and in concert halls around the world in cities that include Beijing, Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Berlin, and Johannesburg.

She recently received the Friends of Canadian Music Award, during the Opera From Scratch gala concert at St. Matthews United Church in Halifax.

Teleet is a vernacular (and culinary) Farsi word used to refer to a blend, mix, jumble, or collage of different, even unlikely, ingredients. The Ensemble mixes Western and Middle Eastern instruments, Their songs range from classical to folk, originating from the Applachian Mountains to Iranian farmlands.

Janice Isabel Jackson Awarded 2018 Friends of Canadian Music Award

On August 19 Janice Isabel Jackson was presented with the Friends of Canadian Music Award, during the Opera From Scratch gala concert at St. Matthews United Church in Halifax.

Janice is a vocalist, contemporary music specialist, producer, vocal instructor, and coach who has performed around the world in concerts and contemporary music festivals. 

She’s also Artistic Director of Vocalypse, where she most recently presented the week-long workshop Opera From Scratch, which paired six composers and six singers to develop six 10-minute operas for solo voice and piano, with a theme of Nova Scotia cultural or historical significance.

Janice has been recognized for her contribution to Nova Scotian culture by The Honorable Myra A. Freeman, Lieutenant Governor, as well as receiving an Established Artist Award through Arts Nova Scotia.

She’s received grants through Arts Nova Scotia and the Canada Council as well as Talent Trust scholarships.

The Canadian League of Composers (CLC) and the Canadian Music Centre (CMC) jointly administer and present the Friends of Canadian Music Award annually. The award honours people who have shown an exceptional commitment to Canadian composers and their music on a national scale.

The award is split, with half for the established recipient and half for an emerging composer or composition student, who is chosen by the recipient. Janice shares the 2018 Friends of Canadian Music Award with composer Sophie Dupuis.

Janice Jackson and Vocalypse Productions Present Opera from Scratch 2018

Janice Jackson, singer of new classical music and Artistic Director of Vocalypse Productions, will teach two masterclasses in Opera from Scratch, which runs from August 12 - 19.

Janice is a Talent Trust scholarship recipient who’s a soprano, contemporary music specialist, producer, and vocal instructor and coach.

She’s sung over 200 world premieres, many works written specifically for her, and performed with contemporary music ensembles and in concert halls around the world – Beijing, Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Torino, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Berlin, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and more.

Opera From Scratch is a week-long workshop that pairs six composers and six singers to develop six 10-minute operas for solo voice and piano, with a theme of Nova Scotia cultural or historical significance.

The workshop is a collaborative process where the composers and singers are exposed to each others’ methods, resulting in a better understanding of the depth of thought, creativity, and effort that goes into creating even a short work.

To date Opera From Scratch is proud to have premiered 37 new mini operas by composers from around the world. This year the talented group of composers and singers hail from Canada, the US, and Sweden.

Gina Burgess Presents an Exclusive Quintet Premiere at the Halifax Central Library

For this year's Obey Convention, Gina Burgess has created a new and unique piece which she will present at the Halifax Central Library. 

Gina is a four-time ECMA award winner with the gypsy-jazz outfit Gypsophilia, fronts her own klezmer band Der Heisser, is one fifth of the Iqaluit-based Arctic rock band The Jerry Cans, and is a regular collaborator in flamenco and Arabic music ensembles. 

Inspired by the minimalistic compositional tradition of Terry Riley and Steve Reich, Gina has also infused elements of traditional Inuit throat singing, poetry, trance, and Gregorian/Indian chant in her latest composition.

The quintet will feature Gina (violin) Susanne Brown (viola) Norm Adams (cello) Lukas Pierce (double bass) and Janice Jackson (voice).

The premiere will take place Halifax on Thursday, May 24 at the Paul O’Regan Hall at the Halifax Central Library. 

The show starts at 6pm. Admission is free.

Janice Isabel Jackson Performs in International Collaboration CO2 - Cycle de Lieder

It's described as a ". . . contemporary multimedia chamber opera with acoustic, digital, and visual elements". CO2 - Cycle de Lieder is a collaboration between internationally recognized composers Patrick Defossez and Anne-Gabriel Debaecker and performed by French Duo Autres Voix de Piano, French Ensemble Zellig and and Canadian new music diva Janice Isabel Jackson.

The performance explores the merging of flesh and data as sounds created by traditional instruments and the human voice meet digital media. 

CO2 - Cycle de Lieder will be at the Halifax Music Co-op on Barrington Street in Halifax, with shows on May 4 and 5, and an improvisation on May 6. Sound and images from the performance can be found on the CO2 - Cycle de Lieder website; tickets are available through Ticket Halifax.

"Opera From Scrap" is an interactive opera by Janice Isabel Jackson, transformed into a phantasmagorical creature in real time by Arianne Pollet-Brannen.

"Opera from Scrap" is an interactive opera. The soloist, Janice Isabel Jackson, transforms into a phantasmagorical opera character while an elaborate costume is constructed onto her by visual artist Arianne Pollet-Brannen. Materials for the costume will be assembled from scraps of fabric, some of which contributed by the audience. In a similar manner, material for the opera will be assembled from live tweets, texts and melodies submitted by the public as well as various sounds extracted from the surroundings. Words, tweets, stories, scraps of paper, fabric, flowers, and other unplanned items will all converge in a manner that completely transforms the vocalist. The singer is required to absorb and create sounds and melodies that will either be concrete stories, unexpected random expressions, or abstract sounds throughout the performance. This project allows the public to experience a continuous transformation throughout the evening. Short recordings of audience comments and singing will also be taken and played back as part of the landscape during the ongoing performance. At the end of the evening, at 11:15pm, the public is invited to return to the scene and experience the fruits of the slow metamorphosis in which the re-envisioned and costumed opera singer presents a newly created 30-minute opera. This manifestation of visual and performance art creates a platform where the audience becomes a storyteller, composer, collaborator, and co-conspirator throughout. Jerome Blais' (Un)Forgotten Voices - Le Tombeau de Barbeau with Janice Jackson, soprano and 1986 NSTT Portia White award recipient, is a multimedia show based on the work of Canadian folklorist Marius Barbeau (1883-1969), who many consider the father of Canadian ethnomusicology. This concert represents Jérôme Blais’ very personal commentary on Barbeau’s work, in particular the massive collection of wax roll recordings found at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

MUSIC BROUGHT TO LIFE FROM RARE MANUSCRIPTS FOUND IN SOUTH AMERICA’S OLDEST CATHEDRALS

Salsa Barocca, with Janice Jackson, soprano and Sylvie Proulx, guitar, is an all Latin American program that explores the folk genre along with the Baroque repertoire of the Spanish colonial period.  Selections feature voice and guitar arrangements ranging from chaconas to tangos.   Salsa Barocca combines music which reflects the African indigenous and European influences that define Latin American music.  Both Janice and Sylvie have extensive experience performing contemporary, baroque, and tango.  Salsa Barocca is a natural extension of their quest for exciting, unique and moving programs.
