Jeff Joudrey's Halifax Camerata Singers presents Memories of the Heart on

at First Baptist Church, Halifax.  

From their press release:
The choir is joined by mezzo-soprano Christianne Rushton and pianist Lynette Wahlstrom in a romantic program of songs and memories of childhood, of loves lost, forbidden or foolish, and songs of times gone by.
 
Mezzo-soprano Christianne Rushton and Camerata open the program with a challenging choral composition by Aaron Copland titled In The Beginning.  Christianne will also perform works by Gaetano Donizetti, Franz Schubert, and Ola Gjeilo. 

Guest violinist, Jennifer Jones, of Symphony Nova Scotia and Rhapsody Quintet, is featured in Eric Whitacre’s beautiful Five Hebrew Love Songs.  Christianne will also perform Whitacre’s arrangement of Goodnight Moon, whose text is from the famous children’s book by Margaret Wise Brown.

Music featured by the Camerata Singers includes Only in Sleep by Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvald, Chant for a Long Day by Canada’s Stephen Hatfield, and songs from the American folk and gospel traditions.

George Elliott Clarke and friends recorded CD in Halifax

It was a pleasure for the Talent Trust to be at the concert of Afro-Metis Nation. Thank you Juanita Peters for the invitation.

Afro-Metis Nation celebrates their African Nova Scotian and Metis heritage through music and words. 

Former scholarship recipient George Elliott Clarke impressed with his poems and singing voice. 

We also finally met Chris White, nephew of Portia White. Chris and his family have donated Portia White CDs to the Talent Trust to help fund the annual Portia White Award given out by the Talent Trust.

Congratulations! Barbara Hannigan awarded 2018 GRAMMY – Crazy Girl Crazy Best Classical Solo Vocal album

Barbara Hannigan’s
Crazy Girl Crazy wins the GRAMMY award for Best Classical Solo Vocal album.

The recording is the first showcase of her work as both a soprano and conductor, with the Amsterdam-based orchestra LUDWIG. The album was released on 22 September 2017, by Alpha Classics.

Crazy Girl Crazy brings together Berg’s Lulu Suite, Berio’s Sequenza III for solo voice, and a specially commissioned arrangement of Gershwin’s Girl Crazy by Tony Award-winning composer and arranger Bill Elliott.

Multi-award-winning violinist Heemin Choi has performed extensively and has appeared as soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia. Presently on a full music scholarship in Texas, he brings a bit of southern warmth to this mid-winter recital.

Heemin Choi has received multiple scholarships from the Talent Trust and won the 2016 and 2010 Raymond Simpson Award and the 2014 NSTT's Lieutenant Governor's Award.

Marley Johnson will exhibit his new painting series at the Craig Gallery until January 28, 2018.

From the Craig Gallery's website: 
Artist statement: My paintings investigate the agency of colour through a vibrant, messy and precarious sensibility. These works are suggestive landscapes, investigating the inner exploration of indexical mark making, working with a formal and vital approach, I have been influenced by modes of expressionism, experimenting with its potential. The shapes and contours implies a playfulness, exuberance, and a sense of effervescence or froth which forms in-between the push//pull of tides. By breaking down the impression of the gestures, leaving it raw and undefined I hope to reveal something transparent about the process of painting and color.

Bio: Marley Johnson completed his BFA at NSCAD university in 2015, he also studied at Cooper Union in New York City on an exchange. Upon graduating Marley was awarded a residency in Lunenburg NS, where he spent a year working within a ceramics community. During that year he also received a Talent Trust scholarship. Marley is currently doing his MFA at Concordia university in Montreal.
